Parent-Teacher Conferences a Success

"Ever since I became Superintendent of Avon Schools in 2020," says Dr. Scott Wyndham, "One common theme I have heard from Avon parents and caregivers is that they missed having the dedicated time each year to participate in parent-teacher conferences."

Last spring, district leaders amended the 2023-24 school year calendar to include dedicated space and time for conferences to occur on two afternoons in September. Students in grades K-8 spent the morning at school and then completed the instructional day at home doing e-learning assignments. (This schedule, among other things, kept us from using any of our three annual e-learning days, which are reserved for severe weather.) Parents/caregivers and teachers were then able to use the afternoon for conferences. 

We surveyed parents and educators about the experience and here is what they said:

Staff feedback (238 responses)

• 92% of staff shared that the conferences were a good opportunity to share progress with my students' parents/guardians.
• 94% of staff shared that the conferences positively affected my relationships with the parents/guardians of my students.

Parent feedback (533 responses)

• 94% of parents said the conferences informed me on my child(ren)'s progress.
• 90% of parents said the conferences positively affected my relationship with my child(ren)'s teacher.

These numbers speak to how well Avon parents and teachers utilized the time and engaged with one another during conferences. Parent-teacher relationships are for student success, and we will continue providing opportunities for these excellent interactions.
